abstract

the increasing use of styrene, for the production of thermoplastics and rubbers, has given a special importance to this vital materialin petrochemical industries. more than 95 per cent of styrene production in the world is by dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene. present styrene production units are basically designed on the basis of 1940s units. producing countries and related research centres have tried to use specific conditions and catalysts in order to get better conversion. in this report, the importance, uses, technical problems in production methods and the new pilot plant results are evaluated. in order to erect a new styrene production unit with 200,000 tons capacity in a year, the calculated investment required are about 24 million dollars in 1987. comparing this new method with similar present units there is 25 per cent saving in steam and fuel requirements.

Adsorption of styrene monomer on activated carbon.

Styrene is discharged particulary from the factories of styrene resin and synthetic rubber, and it was listed as one of the offensive odor substances by the Offensive Odor Control Law in Japan at 1976. Styrene vapor has stimulating action on eye (STEWART et al. 1968) and membrana of nose and trachea (STEPHENSON & FOSDICK 1960). It has toxic effects on blood cells and liver (KATZ 1962), and nerv...

Modeling and sensitivity analysis of styrene monomer production process and investigation of catalyst behavior

In this work, a fundamental kinetic model based upon the Hougen–Watson non-porosity formalism was derived and used to simulate dehydrogenation and oxidation axial flow reactors. In addition, partial pressure profiles of components during styrene production process inside porous catalyst were obtained using Dusty-Gas model. The preservation equations are adopted to calculate temperature and flow...

Multiobjective optimization of an industrial styrene reactor

The paper describes a multiobjective optimization study for industrial styrene reactors using non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA). Several twoand threeobjective functions, namely, production, yield and selectivity of styrene, are considered for adiabatic as well as steam-injected styrene reactors. Pareto optimal (a set of equally good) solutions are obtained due to conflicting effect...
